About Cody

Having spent much of his life immersed in video games, Cody turned his love for gaming into a career that blends technical skills with creative design. He has contributed to a range of projects, including virtual reality, mobile and desktop games, Through these diverse experiences, Cody has honed his skills in game design, programming, and interactive storytelling.

Cody has also gained hands-on experience through multiple work-study positions, teaching game design and programming, and interning at Ubisoft Toronto as a motion capture technician.  In 2024, he won $2,000 from Ontario Tech University's Venture Creation Pitch Competition to launch his start-up studio, Future Fables.

Cody hopes to leverage his wide field of expertise towards founding a successful game development business.

My academic journey began with an Advanced Diploma in Game Programming from Humber College, where I developed a solid foundation in object-oriented programming and in the production of video games and mobile applications. During my studies here, I was involved in two separate projects using virtual reality, a space themed flight sim called Void Runner and a work study project involving the planned construction of the Barret Centre for Technological Innovation, prior to its construction.

Shortly after, I pursued and completed my Bachelor’s in Game Development and Entrepreneurship at Ontario Tech University. Here I furthered my understanding of the entire production pipeline, developing skills in project management, 3D and 2D digital art, as well as business and entrepreneurship. I had the opportunity to work a research project directed towards studying the retention of learned skills through exposure of contextual and non-contextual feedback within a game. Additionally, I participated in and completed in the Brilliant Catalyst incubator program where my team, FutureFables, won 3rd place in the Brilliant Catalyst Pitch Competition and later claimed 1st place in the 2024 OntarioTech Venture Creation pitch competition.

In addition to my academic achievements, I have gained practical experience through freelance contract projects and an internship at Ubisioft Toronto. As a Motion Capture Intern at Ubisoft, I was responsible for capturing and cleaning motion capture data, researching real-time rendering systems, running tests on the mocap systems, writing accessibility scripts for HMC switchboard, working with actors, managing props, and assisting the production team as a production assistant. The experience not only enhanced my technical skills but also taught me the importance of effective communication and collaboration in a professional setting. Upon completion of my internship, I had designed and created a technical onboarding guide/documentation for future interns and new hires, which has received praise for identifying a need for the documentation and being proactive in its development, and is now being used at both the Toronto and Montreal studios. I continue to work at Ubisoft as an external contractor for motion capture productions, primarily working as an HMC Technician, but also filling other roles such as Triggerman and Production Assistant.

One of the most rewarding experiences in my career has been working with Professor James Robb as a Teaching Assistant for Tabletop Game Design and Digital Game Design courses, and as a Course Developer for an Unreal Engine 5 introductory course. Working with students and sharing my own knowledge and experience, as well as assisting in their own personal and professional growth, has provided me with a lasting desire to pursue a career in teaching game production and related fields. This desire has led me to work with a California based company called CodingMinds to teach youth between the ages of grade 4 to grade 12 in the field of programming and coding across a variety of different tools and languages, including Python, Unity, Unreal, and more. Working with these students and watching them succeed and grow is an incredibly rewarding and fulfilling experience!
